I expect you are talking about a mattress set. Right? If so, I suggest forgetting about buying on-line. How will you know if you like the feel of the mattress if you haven’t spent at least 15 to 20 minutes lying on it in your normal sleep position?

Although an on-line seller may offer a “30 night in-home trial” after which you can return the mattress, there are conditions. What isn’t mentioned prominently in the ad (its in the minuscule fine print) is that you have to pay the return shipping and the mattress and box spring/foundation must be in their original packaging. If the mattress has a stain on it you will not be allowed to return it.

Consumer Reports in the U.S. did a study on mattress buying. They had the subject spend 15 minutes on a mattress in their normal sleep position and then write down their impressions of the mattress. The subjects were then allowed to take the mattress home, sleep on it for 30 nights and again, write down their impressions of the mattress. The comments after 15 minutes and 30 nights were very similar. CR concluded that if you like a mattress after 15 minutes you’ll still like it after 5 years.

Another consideration is whether or not the mattress is really new. Obviously I don’t know the laws in Europe concerning “mattress refurbishing” but in the U.S. its against the law in several states. Yes, there are actually companies that go around collecting used mattresses, re-covering them and then selling them at a low price. One such company in the U.S. didn’t even bother to sanitize the mattress – the ones they sold were found to be soiled and unsanitary and several had indications of bedbug infestation.

Visit a local mattress seller and choose your mattress and buy it there.
